Email from Martha - Jan. 5

Hi All,

We left San Diego last night about 11pm.  It was beautiful to see all the city lights from the ship.  When I woke this morning, a bit tired I must admit, I was brought to life by seeing the shoreline as we were coming into port in Mexico. By now we have successfully embarked the students.

The last two days has been as non-stop as I had imagined with training and preparation since we boarded. Lots of people to meet, but even more lots of information to take in and integrate. The Student Life staff seems to be functioning well together which bodes well for the trip.  Tonight is our first “sea meeting” with the students then an all-day orientation for them tomorrow.

I still anticipate that this journey will be fun and exhausting and amazing.  I hope that I will be able to do an adequate job of catching it all in writing to share.   It may take a few days until there is time for capturing more detail.  More later from seamail hopefully.  I gather I can’t send much in the way of attachments here, but hope to send verbal snippets along the way.

Next stop is Hawaii.  I will be working on blog posts as I go to update everyone.  Still figuring out how to upload photos to my computer.   In the meantime, imagine water with sun glinting off it with barren hills surrounding it on the land.

    Martha, you write so beautifully and give me/us such a good sense of how your journey begin. I hope the crossing to Hawaii was good and that you enjoy your day in Hawaii. Marylu

Mauritius -- March 11 Pack your bags!   I’ve found paradise.   Well, probably not, if I looked a little closer, but it sure seemed like it during our one day in this small African country, an island near the eastern coast of the continent.    Since it was a fueling stop, we were only scheduled for a one-day stop.   I suspect 900 of us descending on the island for more than one day would have been too overwhelming anyway. Everyone had to be on either a field class or a field program in order to leave the ship. Field classes are trips that faculty run for their classes and are organized around a theme of the class. Each class has 1 in one of the ports on the trip. Only students in the class are allowed to attend and this trip is included in their overall fees.   Field programs are trips that SAS organizes and participants pay to join.   There were a total of 23 trips of about 30 people each flowing through the island country. No time for a blog post yet, but just a heads up that Martha docked in Hawaii yesterday morning about 7:30 am local time.  She spent the morning doing some work to help the students get off the boat, and spent the afternoon on a catamaran and snorkeling. While the initial hustle and bustle of the trip and getting students situated has kept her busy thus far, she did have time to send over a few photos of her room and a Hawaiian rainbow:

Vietnam and Cambodia! February 8th, 2018 - February 13th, 2018

(Adventures in China Coming in a Separate Blog Post Soon!) Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam – February 8, 2018 Participating in the SAS Life Along the Mekong River and Cambodia program. Our group is small which will be nice. Last night we spent some time talking about our expectation for the trip which includes guidelines for drinking (drink okay; not drunk), and being on time (on time is 5 minutes early, oh no!) Hopefully, this will lay the groundwork for a good trip. Today we traveled for what seemed like forever by bus from HCMC to Vinh Long, a little town by a tributary of the Mekong River. Lots of small houses and stores along the roadway as we traveled. It reminded of the many long trips we took through Indonesia (without the mosques). It was quite a contrast to HCMC which could be confused for NYC with its large skyscrapers and French architecture.
